The modwife profession, from tradition to modernism

D. Stan, M. Mitran

Rezumat: The need of reconsidered the status of this profession is imposed also by the statistical data which put Romania on the top places in Europe regarding the infant death rate, the neonatal mortality and the young age rate (under the age of 20) in mothers at birth. Romania is also on the 2nd place in Europe when talking about the maternal death rate and on the 3rd place in practicing the caesarian intervention as a choice of child delivery. 36.9% out of the total childbirth are performed by means of this procedure. The reintegration of the midwife in the system of pregnancy supervision would offer an efficient and easy-to-implemet solution in order to reduce the alarming percentage of unattended women during pregnancy. Due to their training and by integration inside the field teams of mother-child caring or in the individual offices, the midwifes can monitor the physiological pregnancy all the way through and can point out in due time pathologies, which can endanger the mother or the child’s life, escalating the high-risk cases towards the obstetricians or physicians of other area of expertise.
Cuvinte cheie: midwife, professionalism, infant death rate.
