Colposcopic correlations in patients with LSIL results in cervical citology - the 3-year experience of Bucur Maternity

Rezumat: Introduction. International guidelines (ASCCP) recommend colposcopic examination for low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) and specific treatment in the presence of HPV infection (Human Papilloma Virus). Materials and method. We realized a retrospective study in the Bucur Maternity, that involved the evaluation of the colposcopy registers from 2014 to 2016. Among patients evaluated by colposcopy we selected the patients whose initial cytological diagnosis was LSIL. Results. In our study we included 48 patients who accomplished the inclusion criteria. The mean age was 38.7 (22 to 46 years) with a preponderance of 25-35 year of age. The majority of the patients had the first LSIL result at a routine cytology examination, but 18.75% of them had persistent LSIL. Genotyping for HPV infection was performed in 72% of patients. 47.91% of these had HPV high-risk results. The colposcopic examination was suggestive for low grade lesion in 93.75% of cases and for high grade lesion in 6.2% (3 cases) The histopathological examination confirmed pre-neoplastic cervical lesions CIN 2 (2 cases) or CIN 3 (1 case). Conclusions. The majority of the patients who presented in our clinic for LSIL citologic results had HPV low risk types infection. Colposcopic results were predominantly suggestive for low-grade colposcopic lesions.
