Postmenopausal osteoporosis in Romania

F.C. Iancu

Rezumat: Osteoporosis is the second biggest health problem in the world after cardiovascular disease, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The disease is characterized by low bone density and deterioration of bone tissue, resulting in bone frailty and fracture. In Romania, menopause appears 10 years earlier than the internationally accepted limit, which means that women are facing an earlier risk when talking about osteoporosis. The percentage of women in distress (osteopenia) is high, approximately 10% above the internationally accepted limits, thus indicating poor nutrition in youth stage when the bone structure is beginning to form itself.
Cuvinte cheie: menopause, osteoporosis, osteodensitometry.
