Rezumat: During the last decades we have witnessed new dimensions of medical practice. There are demographic changes (decrease in birth rate, a population in a continuous aging process), a permanent growth in non-transmissible diseases and risks pertaining new infectious agents, modern life style and environment. Strategic European indications pertaining the consolidation of medical assistance in obstetrics emphasize the main role of midwives and nurses in the society efforts to face the challenges of public health systems, accessibility to medical services, respecting human rights and covering the need for change. Midwives and nurses are worldwide recognized as essential members in multidisciplinary teams and form the biggest group of professionals in the medical field. Evidence-based practice is the concern of every midwife and nurse. This should be facilitated by educational means, research, leadership, and access to evidence sources. Foundation and development of research in obstetrics and medical assistance represent an important way of understanding and improvement of medical care. Research represents the main method through which new knowledge are discovered and brought to practice for an improvement in medical care offered by midwives and nurses.
