Rezumat: Introduction. Borderline ovarian tumors are a distinct group of heterogeneous lesions, both histologically and regarding the evolution different from ovarian carcinomas. They are low-grade malignancy tumors with good longterm prognosis. Methods. The multicenter, retrospective study was conducted during 2014-2015 on a group of 220 patients who underwent ovarian cystectomy, performed either by laparoscopy or laparotomy. In case of three of these patients the histopathological diagnosis was of borderline ovarian tumor. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of the study and to analyze the literature data published regarding this pathology. Discussion. Histologically, most borderline tumors are serous or mucinous, other histological types representing a small percentage. For a better differentiation of the histological subtypes it is necessary the analysis using immunohistochemical testing. Symptoms, when present, are not specific. Although imagistic examinations may raise the suspicion of a borderline tumor, in most cases the diagnosis is established by the histopathological examination. The treatment is surgical and depends on the staging of the disease and the patient’s desire of reproductive and hormonal function preservation. In the case of young patients who want fertility preservation, we decided for conservative treatment.Conclusions. The therapeutic conduct in borderline ovarian tumors, which are low malignancy tumors, allows the preservation of reproductive function of the patient, usually the subsequent evolution of the disease being good.
