Posterior vaginal fornix syndrome: a paradigm shift in understanding and treatment of the perineal disorders

Rezumat: Genital prolapse and its associated pathological manifestations represent a significant health problem among elderly female population. Posterior vaginal fornix syndrome belongs to the category of mistreated or ignored pathologies, and it has a significant negative impact on the patients’ quality of life. Posterior vaginal fornix syndrome symbolizes a complex pathophysiological manifestations classically defined by the triad: micturition imperiosity, nocturia and chronic pelvic pain. Clinical and paraclinical examination allows a proper identification of the perineal defect which leads to the symptomatolgy appereance. Modern treatment of posterior vaginal fornix syndrome is the reconstructive surgery of the perineum that restores the perineal anatomy. Reconstructive surgical techniques final objectives are an improvement in urinary and feces continence, disappearance of the chronic pelvic pain and an improved sexual life of the patients.
